Joints of Lower Extremity

Hip:
a. What is the articular capsule - especially its boundaries?
b. What is the ligamentum capitis (ligament of the head) - and why is it important?
c. What is the fovea capitis?
d. What is the labrum?
e. What is the transverse acetabular ligament?
f. Define the iliofemoral, pubofemoral, and ischiofemoral ligaments - provide the attachments of each ligament?
g. Why is the iliofemoral ligament very important in erect posture?
h. What is the relationship of the iliopsoas muscle to the iliofemoral and pubofemoral ligaments at the head of the femur?
i. Make a chart and list flexion, extension, abduction, adduction, lateral rotation, and medial rotation - provide the muscles for each movement of the hip.
j. What limits: flexion, extension, abduction, adduction?
k. Define the synovial membrane.
Knee:
a. Define the articular capsule of the knee joint.
b. Define the oblique popliteal ligament and the arcuate ligament?
c. What is a bursa?
d. Discuss some of the bursa of the knee.
e. Define the tibial collateral ligament and the fibular collateral ligament.
f. Define the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments. What is the function of each ligament?
g. Define the medial and lateral meniscus.
h. What is the transverse genicular ligament?
i. What is the relationship of the tibial collateral ligament to the medial meniscus? Is this the same relationship for the fibular collateral ligament and the lateral meniscus?
j. What is the relationship of the popliteus muscle to the fibular collateral ligament?

l. What is the most stable position of the knee? The most unstable?
Ankle:
a. Define the deltoid ligament.
b. Define the lateral ligaments.
c. Define the short and long plantar ligaments, and the spring ligament.
d. What is the relationship of the peroneus longus to the long plantar ligament.
e. Make a chart and list dorsiflexion and plantar flexion - provide the muscles for each movement of the ankle.
f. What is the most stable position of the ankle? The most unstable?
g. Why is an inversion sprain more common than an inversion sprain.
h. Discuss flexion and extension of the ankle joint.
i. Discuss inversion and eversion of the ankle joint.
