3.
A line from the midaxilary line and 8th intercostal space to the liver would cross the skin, tela subcutanea, deep fascia of thorax, external abdominal oblique muscle, external, internal, and innermost intercostal muscles, endothoracic fascia covering the costal and diaphragmatic parietal pleura in the costodiaphragmatic recess, diaphragm, and liver. In addition to the fascia explicitly mentioned, there is also fascia covering each muscle. I'm not sure what fascial planes are, but counting layers of fascia...
3 fascia were named above. Plus 1 for each muscle (although the wound goes through both sides; would that be two?) thats 5. Plus there must be at least one associated with the liver and abdominal cavity. That makes 9.
