We learned that the hamstring muscles (biceps femoris, semimembranosus, and semitendinosus) are all innervated by the tibial division of the sciatic nerve with the exception of the short head of the biceps femoris, which is innervated by the common fibular division of the sciatic nerve; however, the sciatic nerve does not split into the tibial and common fibular divisions until it reaches the popliteal fossa, when it has almost passed all the hamstring muscles. Could someone explain how this works?
