: Is the femoral artery still within the femoral sheath when the deep femoral artery arises from it?
Response: The femoral sheath is an evagination of fascia in the pelvis - transversalis fascia. It extends for 2-3 cm beyond the inguinal ligament. Beyond this the adventitia of vessels covers these structures.
The deep femoral (profunda femoral) vessels arise typically around 4 cm below the inguinal ligament, though the origin may range from 2-5 cm. The deep femoral artery (or its branches) is not considered to be within the femoral sheath.
